I want to do good for the world and don't really care about salary. I know I don't want to do criminal defense or medical malpractice.I know I want to be a lawyer but don't know what I want to specialize in, advice?
1. Go to law school, take a bunch of courses, read many cases, and decide what kind of cases interest you.
2. Talk to several lawyers.
3. Talk to the career center at your law school.I know I want to be a lawyer but don't know what I want to specialize in, advice?
The guy above me has some good advice. In addition, you'll have opportunities to intern in various law firms while you're in school. Try to find a legal aid firm, or one that does mostly pro bono work. You will have more than enough work to do, even as a student intern.
You have to get a job first......consider this
Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING vocational field. Many reasons. Many people today think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. We simply have WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals - we have an absolute GLUT!! (';Legal Professionals'; includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)
Regarding being a Paralegal: Paralegals can be found in many types of businesses. Employers (usually law firms) in the field of Law want employees with BACHELORS degrees from traditional universities/colleges. Those ';certificates'; you sometimes see advertised, aren't worth the paper they are printed on - they are generally SCAMS.
Even IF you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work ';down'; as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of THEIR bills paid %26lt;THIS would be your competition. And the competition is FIERCE!!
Now... the law schools know this, but they won't tell you the truth %26gt;that the job market/economy is SATURATED with WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will LIE to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival - they will tell students ANYTHING to get to the students' money. (Which is why they won't tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) AND these schools continue to recruit and churn out even MORE Legal Professionals.............
If you don't believe me, then just do a SEARCH here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law.
In the book ';So You Want to be a Lawyer? by Marianne Calabrese and susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): ';The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000 students graduate EACH YEAR from 200 law schools in the United States. The competition is very keen for jobs and clients.';
If you want a JOB when you are done with your studies, consider and look into the field of %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;HEALTHCARE! %26lt;THIS is where the jobs are! and scholarships!
getting your JD is quite costly and usually done by student loans that take years and years to pay off so I presume you might want to rethink your career and choose one in which 1) you can repay your student loans, and 2) because attorneys ';buy'; their way into their positions within a law firm. All I can tell you is that the small law firms I've worked for got eaten up by the bigger law firms (small ones couldn't survive). You might want to do file clerk work or runner work for a law firm while you're attending school so as to get your foot in the door, and then to determine what specialty you'd want to do first so as to fit into that specific law firm (as to what specialty they need at the moment). There are too many attorneys out there now so you'll have a tough time getting employed so I presume you'd want to take what work you get.
If you want to do good for the world, go be a social worker.
Going to law school is not something you do without a plan. If you don't know absolutely positively what you want to do (and have a job waiting for you), DON'T BOTHER.
Sorry to trample your dreams, but you need a reality check.
