I want to be a professional cake baker and business owner. Any advice?

I want to have my own business. I live in Miami now, but after my husband completes his committment to work (2 1/2 more years), we will probably move back up north. I want to be able to take my career where ever I go.

Ok, on to my question.....How do I learn to bake cakes professionally? I want to do special occasion cakes and especially wedding cakes. I don't know if I should take some courses at the local Johnson and Whales or if there are small intimate (and less expensive) classes I can take. I also don't know if it is best to apprentice at a bakery and learn all I can until I move and then open up my own. How hard is it to get a baker to let me work with them w/o experience? I don't mind starting where I need so I can learn all I can.

Help!! Where do I start??!!I want to be a professional cake baker and business owner. Any advice?
Best thing to do is to intern at a local bakery (not a mass-producing one) but a no-kidding cake-baking business. If you intern, earning little income, you'll learn a TREMENDOUS amount. Let the owner know you're going to start your own business...but in a different marketplace (town or city) from theirs, so you're not going to become competition.

Your time and dedication will be rewarded with a priceless education. NO SCHOOL or CLASS can teach you what hands-on experience will. When not at the bakery, read, research and experiment. (Practice, practice, practice.)

You sound like a bright individual who will have no problem picking up this new trade. And I can say, when my cake baker went out of business (her husband had a heart attack so she closed shop to care for him) many businesses went scattering for a new baker. Once you've mastered the art...you can take it to any city and start again.

Good luck dear!I want to be a professional cake baker and business owner. Any advice?
I took a course at the local community college in baking and also one in business

The baking course is two years for an AAS degree and they will teach you everything you need to know.
